Market Samurai vs Analytics SEO

 Market Samurai is Adobe Air based SEO software, which is well known and liked in the affiliate space. It is probably one of the best desktop solutions available and boasts a number of unique features making it a great choice for bloggers, affiliates and beginners. These features include visualisations into keyword difficulty, help looking up exact match domains, affiliate products, PPC support and WordPress integration.

Many young marketers have learnt SEO through using the software and it’s enabled beginner users to analyse market competition and conduct keyword research to a reasonable standard. Experienced marketers who use Market Samurai also seem to rely heavily on it for keyword research and it is one of the best tools I am aware of for keyword brainstorming and long tail keyword research.

Arguably it is also most popular for its one off pricing model, although this too has its downside as access to advanced data and metrics inevitably always comes from a recurring license fee. To date, a fundamental part of SEO software is link data with SEOmoz and Majestic SEO proving to be leading providers. Market Samurai does provide link data powered from Majestic SEO, but lacks key metrics required by expert SEOs including anchor text analysis, referring / linking domains, domains that link to multiple competitors, IP and subnet information to name some of the most obvious.

However, the major issue with Market Samurai is its withdrawal from automatically supporting keyword rankings in Google (in January 2012). As you can see from Eugene's comments, what they plan to do is mirror the kind of infrastructure which underpins successful SaaS platforms such as Raven and our own - Analytics SEO.

Market Samurai could be ideal for bloggers, affiliates working on small projects and projects that have no budget to invest in link data. It could also be worth considering to be used simply as a keyword brainstorming tool for professional SEOs.

It may be too early to say for certain, but the recent announcement that Market Samurai  is now going to be using Bing data instead of Google for key areas of the software looks likely to reduce how effective the tool is for experienced SEOs who will want to focus on Google as their primary market and search engine. It will also be interesting to see how Market Samurai will continue to work without limiting data for users or moving to a monthly pricing model (and if they do, how much they end up charging).
